a change of direction?!

After the mornings session on our case studies unit, the group met to make a final decision on the theme for our environment. From our two choices we had selected last week (the ghost town and the stars dressings room) the group as an entirety expressed concern over these final two. It seemed the weekend had allowed us all rethink which direction we wanted to go in. Everyone agreed they wished to pursue a new route and we soon headed back to our short list to review the ideas once more selecting as our theme *drum roll please*

Post Apocalyptic city which is loosely based around London *breathes* what a title.

I say loosely of course because we as a group didn't want the pressure of creating a realistic version of London, ooooo no, no photo-realism for us just yet thank you very much. London of course would be a good source of inspiration for our environment as it has a variety of design, and being close to london, the group could easily take a trip there to research and catalogue photographs for reference. However, the group has agreed to keep an open mind into other architectural styles, and with the upcoming Barcelona trip there could be some inspiration appearing from Spain in our work perhaps.

The group then started researching images on the internet in order to gain an insight into the sort of look we wanted to achieve as well as general inspiration. We also started bouncing off ideas for a narrative to include in our piece as a basic fly through a destroyed city would be pretty boring. We discussed the possibility of a nuclear attack or war upon london but no decision as of yet has been finalized.

We also feel we want to take a more artistic direction for our piece instead of replicating realism. In industry its much harder to do just whatever you want, so at this stage of our education its ideal to take the opportunity to experiment as much as possible, even if the final result doesn't work, at least we went for it. Dan mentioned the artist John Virtue who works in monochrome to create his landscape pieces. He's famous too for his images of london depicting iconic landmarks such as the Gherkin and St. Paul's Cathedral, which is ideal for us to look at and take inspiration from. His work is dark, moody, often ambiguous with a definite presence of atmosphere which as a group we agreed we'd like to adopt for our work. The style will give us a great opportunity to create some great textures to use on our models which will help push the theme even further for the final outcome.

Im much happier the group has settled on an idea were all happy with. To a certain extent, Im still unsure how we will complete this, but then thats all in the process of learning and finding out. We will just have to develop our ideas and make it possible.
